Three games set the tone for a fun-first football season as players return to the field ahead of Bunny Bowl finale
There was competition at the West Orillia Sports Complex Friday afternoon, but more than anything, there was energy.
The opening of the Sunshine Superwash SportsKlub Football season felt exactly the way it is meant to feel. Teammates reconnecting, new players finding their footing, big plays mixed with laughs, and a reminder that this league is built just as much on community as it is on football.
Three games kicked off the season on April 3, each with its own story. The Orillia Synergy Healthcare Augies and McLean and Dickey Insurance Thunderbolts opened the season with a game that never got out of reach. The Augies came away with a 20-12 win, but the result was only part of the story.
There were moments on both sides where things clicked, followed by moments that looked like exactly what opening night always brings. Timing just off, routes still being figured out, players shaking off the rust. It's all a part of the fun that comes with Week 1.
The Augies, defending a rare Power Bowl three-peat, leaned on experience and found a way to finish drives, while the Bolts showed flashes that suggest they will grow into a tough matchup as the season goes on. It was a game that felt competitive, but more importantly, it felt like players enjoying being back.
The second game brought a different kind of energy.
The Wagner Lawn Care Trojans came out flying and never really slowed down in a 32-0 win over the CMF Automotive Silver Bombers. The offence found rhythm early, the ball moved, and confidence built with each possession.
Quarterbacks Oswell James and Tyler Hinds connected with multiple receivers and kept things moving, while the reigning rookie of the season Mathieu Bolduc found the end zone three times in a performance that stood out.
At the same time, the Silver Bombers never stopped competing. Even as the game got away, there were moments of effort, adjustments, and players continuing to show up for each other.
The final game of the night might have been the most fitting representation of SportsKlub Flag Football.
The Rick Grant Landscaping Blues and Santa’s Nook Huskers needed overtime to settle a 30-22 result, but the real takeaway was how evenly matched and engaged both teams were. Big plays were answered, momentum shifted, and teammates reacted to every moment together.
The Blues found a way to finish in overtime, but the Huskers showed the kind of fight and positivity that makes them a team people will want to watch this season.
By the end of the afternoon, players were tired, a little sore, and already talking about Sunday for the Cordery Electrical Contracting Bunny Bowl finale.
Sunday night brings everyone back together, starting with the Silver Bombers taking on the Huskers and the Thunderbolts facing the Blues at 7 p.m. It's a quick turnaround, and another chance to play, adjust, and build momentum.
The night wraps up with the Bunny Bowl championship at 8 p.m., featuring the Augies taking on the defending Bunny Bowl champion Trojans. On paper, it is two juggernaut teams clashing with an in-season championship on the line. In reality, it is another night of football, another chance to build relationships, form new friendships, and share in the love of the game.
