Wagner Lawn Care erases early deficit, ends Rick Grant Landscaping's perfect season with 32-26 Orillia flag football championship victory

The Wagner Lawn Care Trojans delivered what may go down as the biggest upset in SportsKlub history Sunday night, defeating the previously unbeaten Rick Grant Landscaping Blues 32-26 in overtime to capture the Power Bowl 39 Orillia flag football championship.

Entering the game, the Blues were 12-0 and chasing the first perfect season in franchise history. They had defeated the Trojans three times during the regular season and were widely considered favourites to lift the trophy. Instead, the Trojans authored a championship performance for the ages.

The Blues wasted little time asserting themselves, opening the game with a pair of explosive touchdowns. Connor Woodbeck connected with Matt Planta on a 95-yard touchdown strike before Rick Grant found Planta again for another 95-yard score to build a 13-0 lead.

The Trojans responded before the end of the first quarter when Oswell James connected with Matt Bolduc for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 13-7.

James struck again in the second quarter, finding Martin Cunningham for another score as the Trojans clawed their way back into the game. The teams headed to halftime deadlocked at 13-13.

The Blues regained control in the third quarter when Woodbeck found Grant for a 25-yard touchdown to put the undefeated squad back in front 20-13.

With their season on the line, the Trojans answered in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Hinds launched a 70-yard touchdown pass to Bolduc, and the successful convert tied the game at 20-20, setting the stage for a dramatic overtime finish.

The extra quarter quickly turned into an instant classic. Sam Skalosky, who had already made an impact throughout the evening, delivered a 20-yard touchdown pass to Hinds to give the Trojans a 26-20 lead.

The Blues answered immediately. Matt Planta stepped in at quarterback and connected with Vince Pitines on a 95-yard touchdown strike, tying the game at 26-26 after the convert attempt failed.

The Trojans responded again. Skalosky delivered once more, this time finding Hinds for a 95-yard touchdown that restored the lead at 32-26.

The Blues had one final opportunity to keep their perfect season alive. On the final play, Hayden Woodbeck's pass intended for Connor Woodbeck was knocked away by Adam Vastopa, sealing the championship and sparking a Trojans celebration.

Tyler Hinds has been named Power Bowl 39 MVP, playing a starring role in the victory, throwing for 225 yards and a touchdown while also hauling in three receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

James contributed 195 passing yards, two touchdown passes and an interception while adding 130 receiving yards. Skalosky completed all three of his pass attempts for 190 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in overtime.

Bolduc finished with four catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns, while Cunningham added a touchdown reception.

For the Blues, Planta was nearly unstoppable, recording 190 receiving yards and two touchdowns while also throwing the game-tying touchdown in overtime. Pitines added 95 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Woodbeck threw for 130 yards and two scores.

The victory gives the Trojans their third championship win over the Blues franchise in Power Bowl history. The two teams previously met in Power Bowls 13, 14 and 33.

More importantly, it denied the Blues a perfect season and cemented Power Bowl 39 as one of the most memorable championship games SportsKlub has ever produced. Whether it ultimately earns recognition as the greatest game in league history will be debated for years to come.

What is certain is that on a summer night at the West Orillia Sports Complex, the Trojans accomplished what no other team could all season.

They beat the Blues.
