Wagner Lawn Care scored 36 points in championship win, while CMF Automotive and Rick Grant Landscaping also deliver statement performances
There was a different kind of energy Sunday night at the West Orillia Sports Complex.
What started as a return to play on Friday turned into a full slate of high-scoring games, standout individual performances, and a championship that offered an early look at the teams to watch this season.
Three games closed out opening weekend, capped by the Cordery Electrical Contracting Bunny Bowl championship, where the Wagner Lawn Care Trojans continued to separate itself as an early contender.
The night opened with the CMF Automotive Silver Bombers earning a 27-18 win over the Santa’s Nook Huskers in a game driven by big plays. Colton Thompson led the way for the Silver Bombers, throwing for 244 yards and 3 touchdowns on his four quarterback drives, consistently stretching the field and finding receivers in space. Ethan Phillips was the primary target, finishing with 248 receiving yards and two touchdowns, including a 95-yard score that stood out as one of the biggest plays of the weekend.
The Huskers answered with production of its own. Calvin Hale threw for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while Lucas Di Mattia added 113 rushing yards and a touchdown, including a 95-yard run that kept the game within reach.
Scott Oliver was a key piece in the passing game with 100 receiving yards and two touchdowns, as the Huskers stayed competitive throughout before the Silver Bombers pulled away late.
The Rick Grant Landscaping Blues followed with a 36-12 win over the McLean and Dickey Insurance Thunder Bolts, powered by one of the most efficient offensive performances of the weekend.
Connor Woodbeck and Tyler Richard combined for 288 passing yards and six touchdowns, spreading the ball effectively and keeping the offence moving. Woodbeck completed 6 of 8 passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns, while Richard added another 143 yards and three scores.
Hayden Woodbeck was on the receiving end of three touchdowns, while Vince Pitines led all receivers in the game with 110 yards, including a 69-yard catch that helped shift momentum.
The Bolts showed early promise with two first-quarter touchdowns, including a 34-yard scoring play finished by Mitchell Hurtubise and a 26-yard connection to Ethan Barber. The offence generated 230 total passing yards, but struggled to keep pace once the Blues found their rhythm.
The Bunny Bowl championship brought together two teams that had already made strong first impressions.
The Trojans entered after a 32-0 win on Friday. The Orillia Synergy Healthcare Augies came in with a 20-12 opening victory and the experience of a championship pedigree. The result was a 36-8 win for Wagner, but it was the offensive execution that stood out.
Oswell James delivered a near-perfect performance, completing all eight of his passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Hinds added 162 passing yards and two touchdowns, giving Wagner a two-quarterback attack that proved difficult to contain.
The offence totalled 402 passing yards and five touchdowns, with multiple big-play connections throughout the game. Adam Vastopa led the receiving group with 144 yards, while Mathieu Bolduc added 93 yards and a touchdown.
The Augies found a moment in the second quarter when Nolan Inglis connected on a deep play that led to a touchdown and two-point conversion, highlighted by a 95-yard gain involving Braeden Errico. Inglis finished with 268 passing yards and a touchdown, continuing to show the ability to generate explosive plays.
But the Trojans consistency and depth proved too much over four quarters. Across two games to open the season, the Trojans have now scored 68 points while allowing just eight, establishing themselves as an early benchmark in the league.
By the end of the weekend, the scores told one story. The atmosphere told another.
Between games, players stayed on the field, talked through plays, and shared moments that reflect what SportsKlub is building. The competition is there, but it exists alongside a focus on inclusion, energy, and making space for players of all skill levels to be part of the game. Opening weekend delivered both.
The season continues Sunday, April 12, with another full slate. The Augies will take on the Silver Bombers, while the Thunderbolts face the Huskers at 7 p.m.
At 8 p.m., the Trojans and Blues meet in a match up of undefeated teams, an early test that already carries intrigue just one week into the season. It is still early, but the storylines are already forming.
