Spencer Shropshire gave SportsKlub a glimpse of what a Team Canada golfer looks like up close Tuesday at Lake St. George Golf Club.


The 18-year-old Orillia standout fired a 33 to win the SportsKlub Open Premier, a special lead-in event ahead of Sunday’s SportsKlub Open championship, the biggest golf event on the SportsKlub calendar.


Christopher Marinakos continued his strong run on the Rick Grant Landscaping Orillia Golf Tour with another impressive showing, shooting a 38, while Austin Patrick finished with a 46.


The event served as an appetizer for Sunday, where players will compete at Lake St. George for the green jacket and a place in SportsKlub history.


For Shropshire, Tuesday’s round was another reminder of why he has become one of the most accomplished young athletes in Orillia.


The Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School graduate was recently named Orillia’s Athlete of the Year after a standout season that included a win at the Ontario Junior Boys Championship, a first-place finish representing Team Ontario at the Williamson Cup, a runner-up finish at the Ontario Junior Boys Spring Classic and a second-place result at the AJGA Coca-Cola Junior Championship in Michigan.


He also finished 14th at the Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship while competing against golfers as old as 55, tied for 11th at the Canadian Junior Championship in New Brunswick and added a first-place finish at Ontario Super Camp.


Shropshire has been selected as one of 10 athletes to represent NextGen Team Canada during the 2026 season and has been named co-captain. Next week, he heads to the University of Michigan, one of the top NCAA Division I golf programs in the United States, where he will continue his golf career on a four-year scholarship.


SportsKlub thanks Shropshire for giving his time to the Klub before beginning the next chapter of his career.


For SportsKlub founder Tyler Evans, having Shropshire take part in the event was about more than the scorecard.


“Spencer is one of the best athletes to ever come out of Orillia, and we’re incredibly grateful he gave his time to SportsKlub before heading to Michigan,” Evans said. “To have someone with his talent and character come out, have fun with our players and be part of what we’re building means a lot. We wish him nothing but the best as he takes this next step.”


Evans also thanked Lake St. George Golf Club for hosting the event and supporting the continued growth of the Rick Grant Landscaping Orillia Golf Tour.
