SportsKlub Football enters its landmark 40th season with eight teams, two expansion franchises, a loaded rookie class and perhaps its deepest championship field yet
SportsKlub Football has produced dynasties, upsets, MVP performances, unlikely heroes and enough Power Bowl memories to fill an entire highlight reel over the past 39 seasons.
In Season 40, for the first time, eight teams will chase the Power Bowl. The defending champion Mariposa Building Services Trojans are back. The Rick Grant Landscaping Blues return after going unbeaten during the Spring 2026 regular season. Reigning MVP Ethan Phillips leads a reloaded CMF Automotive Silver Bombers team. Two expansion franchises enter the Klub with rosters that hardly resemble traditional expansion teams. And several former champions and stars have resurfaced in new colours.
The growth is obvious. Season 40 represents the largest field SportsKlub Football has assembled. But this is still SportsKlub.
It's the weekly hangout that happens to play sports. There will be players chasing MVP awards and others trying flag football for the first time. Some will remember their touchdowns. Others will remember the people they met.
Then somebody is going to put a Power Bowl trophy in the air Nov. 9.
Who?.... Welcome to the Season 40 forecast.
The favourite: Rick Grant Landscaping Blues
Prediction: 9-3 | Ceiling: 11-1 | Floor: 7-5
Let's start with the safest prediction on the board.
The Blues are going to be good.
They didn't lose a regular-season game last spring. Their season ended with an overtime loss to the Trojans in Power Bowl 39, but nobody enters Season 40 with more continuity.
Vince Pitines remains the ultimate home-run threat. Matt Planta is entering his 10th season with the franchise. Andrew Billark had his breakout in the spring. Rick Grant gives them one of the Klub's strongest arms, while Connor and Hayden Woodbeck are coming off terrific seasons.
Canyon Cairns might also benefit from returning to a familiar role. He doesn't have to be the primary downfield threat on this roster. Planta and Pitines create space, allowing Cairns to operate underneath.
And then there's Aiden McMaster. He's a rookie, so nobody really knows yet. But he's young, athletic and arrives looking like another potentially valuable piece.
The Blues aren't No. 1 because they have the flashiest offseason additions. They're No. 1 because we already know this works.
Prediction: First place.
The challenger: CMF Automotive Silver Bombers
Prediction: 9-3 | Ceiling: 11-1 | Floor: 6-6
If the Blues are the safest pick, the Silver Bombers might have the highest offensive ceiling.
Ethan Phillips just produced a historic rookie campaign and won Spring MVP.
And apparently his brother might be even better... Good luck with that.
If Luke Phillips lives up to expectations, this offense could become nearly impossible to contain.
Jesse Bremner is coming off a Quarterback of the Season campaign. Colton Thompson possesses another huge arm. Walker and Ty Armatage return. Matthew Stinson adds another football-smart option capable of contributing at quarterback or receiver.
The Silver Bombers have enough offensive firepower to challenge anyone. They'll need it. Based on the winning percentages of their returning opponents from last season, the Bombers draw one of Season 40's more difficult schedules.
I don't think it matters much. They can win a shootout with anybody.
Prediction: Second place.
Don't forget who has the trophy: Mariposa Building Services Trojans
Prediction: 8-4 | Ceiling: 10-2 | Floor: 5-7
The Trojans are the defending Power Bowl champions because when the biggest games arrived, they were ready.
Tyler Hinds' postseason was spectacular. After battling injury during the regular season, he returned to full strength and caught the overtime championship-winning touchdown.
Now pair him with Oswell James and Sam Skalosky. That's an absurd amount of quarterback versatility.
Martin Cunningham and Adam Vastopa return after promising seasons, too.
The biggest challenge will simply be integrating a talented rookie class while defending a championship.
That's why I have them third. It's also why I wouldn't want to play them in November.
Prediction: Third place.
My sleeper: Speaking of Wildlife Scouts
Prediction: 8-4 | Ceiling: 10-2 | Floor: 5-7
Expansion team? Sure.
Expansion roster? Absolutely not.
Matt Bolduc won Rookie of the Season in Season 38 and enters his first campaign as captain after winning Power Bowl 39.
Jacob Hammill is a former Power Bowl MVP. JJ Healy can quarterback. Paul Laforet can quarterback. And Rhys Rusby might be the most fascinating player on the entire roster.
Healthy Rusby has legitimate MVP ability. His combination of speed, athleticism and football awareness can completely change what the Scouts are capable of doing.
The unknown is the newcomers.
Rachel DeLong, Samantha Goodnough, James Krawecki, Harrison Laugalys, Lucas Scriver and Alicia Smith give this roster plenty of mystery. But, if the younger players develop quickly, this team could become one of the season's biggest surprises.
Their schedule won't do them many favours, either. Based on last season's opponent winning percentages, the Scouts have one of the more difficult roads in the league.
I'm buying anyway.
Prediction: Fourth place.
The ultimate wild card: Synergy Healthcare Monsters
Prediction: 7-5 | Ceiling: 10-2 | Floor: 4-8
Trying to predict the Monsters is like trying to scout a team through fog.
There are so many unknowns. Perhaps no team has a wider range of outcomes.
There is an enormous amount to like. The biggest question is simply chemistry.
Andrew Westelaken gives the expansion franchise an experienced captain and proven receiver. Ethan Barber already established himself as a dynamic playmaker and Spring All-Star.
Then it gets interesting.
Bailey Yeoman has high-level football experience. Jon Vodarek used to be a top Canadian college receiver. Noah Barber enters alongside his brother. And suddenly this doesn't look much like an expansion roster.
Here's the catch: the Monsters have the toughest schedule in Season 40 based on their opponents' winning percentages from last season.
They'll be tested immediately. That might hurt their record. It might also prepare them beautifully for November.
Prediction: Fifth place.
The team nobody should want to play: McLean & Dickey Thunderbolts
Prediction: 6-6 | Ceiling: 9-3 | Floor: 4-8
I stared at this roster for a while... Here's the problem.
Mitchell Hurtubise.
Seamus McGee.
Shawn Harrison.
Kayden Halloch.
Devin Coombs.
Jackson Denne.
There is a version of this season where that core absolutely destroys my prediction.
McGee returns for his 10th SportsKlub season and remains one of the most accomplished receivers in Klub history.
Hurtubise has multiple MVPs and Power Bowl MVPs. Harrison provides size and explosiveness. Halloch showed major quarterback potential as a rookie.
And Coombs is one of the most interesting crossover athletes entering the league.
The question isn't whether there's talent. It's how quickly everything fits together. Finding the right rhythm will determine whether they become contenders or simply one of the league's most entertaining teams.
Prediction: Sixth place — and the team most likely to make me regret this article.
Braeden Price changes the Augies equation
Prediction: 5-7 | Ceiling: 8-4 | Floor: 3-9
The Augies' Spring record doesn't tell you what this team is now.
Braeden Price is back full-time. That's significant.
Price enters his 18th campaign and already owns the most important throw in recent Augies history — the Power Bowl 38 championship-winning touchdown to Tamara Evans.
Evans, herself a two-time Power Bowl MVP, returns as captain.
There are pieces around them. Mike Black. Raygen Hendley. Braeden Errico.
Scott Oliver. And I'm particularly interested in Zach Moreau.
Moreau hasn't really received an extended opportunity to establish himself as a quarterback. He should get one here.
If Price is Price and Moreau takes a leap, the Augies' ceiling climbs considerably.
Prediction: Seventh place.
The great Huskers experiment
Prediction: 4-8 | Ceiling: 8-4 | Floor: 2-10
Here's why preseason predictions are fun... I could be completely wrong about the Huskers.
Lucas Di Mattia remains one of the most productive players in SportsKlub history. He can throw it. He can catch it. He can take over games. Josh Ayers emerged as one of the spring's most explosive downfield threats.
And Marcopolo Calvillo might be the ultimate mystery box of Season 40. He's new to SportsKlub but brings tackle-football experience from Mexico. If that translates immediately, the Huskers suddenly have another significant weapon.
They're also introducing several new players into the Klub. That makes their range enormous.
If the rookies hit, 8-4 wouldn't stun me.
Prediction: Eighth place — but with enough upside to completely scramble the standings.
Turkey Bowl: Give me the Blues
The first in-season tournament introduces another variable. Teams play their scheduled opening matchup before being reseeded, with the top two winning teams by point differential advancing to the championship.
That format screams volatility. One big opening-round performance can completely change the bracket.
My prediction:
Turkey Bowl championship: Blues 28, Silver Bombers 24
The Blues' continuity gives them an advantage early in the season. In a short tournament where teams don't have weeks to make adjustments, I'll take the group that's played the most football together.
Pumpkin Bowl: The Bombers strike back
By Oct. 17, the rookies aren't rookies anymore. Teams know what works. Quarterback rotations have settled. Roles have developed.
That's when I think the Silver Bombers become particularly dangerous.
Pumpkin Bowl championship: Silver Bombers 34, Trojans 27
The MVP race
This is loaded.
Vince Pitines has been an MVP candidate every time he's played a SportsKlub season. Tyler Hinds enters with enormous momentum from his Power Bowl performance. Rhys Rusby has the physical talent. Lucas Di Mattia will accumulate numbers. Jesse Bremner could quarterback the league's best offense.
But I'm staying with the reigning champ.
MVP prediction: Ethan Phillips, Silver Bombers
Phillips isn't just coming off an excellent season.
He's coming off one of the league's most dominant receiving seasons in recent memory.
My top five:
Ethan Phillips — Silver Bombers
Vince Pitines — Blues
Tyler Hinds — Trojans
Rhys Rusby — Scouts
Jesse Bremner — Silver Bombers
Rookie of the Season
There's something objectively hilarious about winning MVP and then hearing:
"Yeah, wait until you see my brother."
Welcome to Season 40, Luke Phillips.
The Silver Bombers rookie enters with enormous expectations, and unlike many newcomers, he won't have to become the focal point immediately. He gets to learn alongside brother Ethan Phillips and within an established offense quarterbacked by Jesse Bremner.
That is a pretty comfortable landing spot.
Rookie of the Season prediction: Luke Phillips
Top five:
Luke Phillips — Silver Bombers
Jon Vodarek — Monsters
Bailey Yeoman — Monsters
Marcopolo Calvillo — Huskers
Jackson Denne — Thunderbolts
And then there were four
If the standings fall this way, the Power Bowl semifinals give us two outstanding matchups.
(1) Blues vs. Scouts (4)
The Scouts have the speed to make this uncomfortable. Rusby and Hammill can produce explosive plays, Bolduc provides leadership and Healy gives them stability at quarterback.
But Planta, Pitines and company have been here too many times.
Prediction: Blues 31, Scouts 25. The Blues return to the Power Bowl.
(2) Silver Bombers vs. Trojans (3)
Oh, baby...
Phillips versus Hinds. Bremner versus James. The spring MVP against the defending champions.
And the Trojans already showed us what happens when we underestimate them in the postseason.
I think this becomes the game of the night.
Prediction: Silver Bombers 35, Trojans 32. The title defence ends three points short.
Power Bowl 40: (1) Rick Grant Landscaping Blues vs. CMF Automotive Silver Bombers (2)
Sometimes the obvious matchup actually happens.
These are my two best regular-season teams. And they're constructed very differently.
The Blues have continuity. The Bombers have firepower. The Blues have Pitines and Planta. The Bombers have the Phillips brothers.
Rick Grant and Connor Woodbeck give the Blues different quarterback looks. Jesse Bremner and Colton Thompson give the Bombers a powerhouse duo.
It feels like the kind of Power Bowl where neither team ever gets comfortable.
Blues score. Bombers answer. Bombers score. Blues answer.
And somewhere late in the game, somebody makes the play that gets replayed at Power Bowl 50.
Power Bowl 40 prediction: CMF Automotive Silver Bombers 34, Rick Grant Landscaping Blues 30. Power Bowl MVP: Ethan Phillips.
The reigning league MVP adds a Power Bowl MVP and championship to his résumé.
One prediction I'm certain about
Most of this will be wrong. And it better be. That's part of the fun.
Some rookie we barely mentioned is going to become everybody's favourite teammate.
Someone will make their first career catch and celebrate like they just won the Grey Cup.
Somebody will score a touchdown they talk about for years.
There will be upsets. There will be ridiculous plays. There will probably be arguments about calls followed by everyone laughing together 15 minutes later.
And eventually there will be a Power Bowl champion... That tradition matters.
SportsKlub has grown from a weekly recreational game into a community with 40 seasons of its own history. The trophy means something because the people playing for it have made it mean something. But nobody needs to win it for their season to matter.
Season 40 will have longtime players chasing another championship and newcomers learning everyone's names. Some will care about their stats. Some won't know there is stats. Some will arrive because they love football. Others will arrive because they wanted something fun to do on a Monday night.
All of them belong.
That's the point. The rivalries last for an hour. The friendships continue after the final snap.
Eight teams. 56 total games. One Power Bowl trophy. And another chapter in a tradition built by the people who keep showing up every week...
The road to Power Bowl 40 starts Aug. 23.
