Runs, laughs, inside-the-park home runs and nonstop action headline the launch of Orillia's new league

SportsKlub Baseball officially arrived Sunday in Orillia, and if Opening Day was any indication, the league is going to be exactly what it was designed to be. Fast-paced, offence-filled, unpredictable, and packed with moments players will be talking about all summer long.
Under sunny skies, the inaugural SportsKlub Baseball season opened with two games that produced 40 total runs, 55 hits, inside-the-park home runs, diving plays, loud dugouts, and a whole lot of smiles.
The day opened with the Studabakers Beachside Rockies defeating the NKD Deer Muskies 12-4 before the Angels exploded offensively in a 19-5 win over the Metropolitans.
For a league built around inclusiveness, energy, and constant action, Opening Day could not have gone much better. The first game in league history belonged to the Rockies.
After the Muskies grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Justin Gary grounded out to bring home Kyler Sept, the Rockies immediately answered back and never really let go of the momentum.
Mike Black delivered the first RBI hit in SportsKlub Baseball history with a single to score Austin Dyck and tie the game. Moments later, Sebastian Oliveira drove in Jessie Eyers on a fielder’s choice before Mitchell Hurtubise ripped a double to score Oliveira and give the Rockies a 3-1 lead after one inning.
The Rockies continued to pile on in the second inning. Black stayed hot with another RBI single, Oliveira brought another run home, and Hurtubise once again delivered in a huge moment, this time lining a single that scored Oliveira while advancing himself into scoring position.
Then came the biggest swing of the game. In the bottom of the third inning, Hurtubise launched an inside-the-park home run that cleared the bases and blew the game open. Jessie Eyers and Sebastian Oliveira both scored on the play as the Rockies pushed their lead to 12-4.
Hurtubise finished the afternoon with three hits, five RBIs, three runs scored, a double, and the league’s first home run. Percy Thomas added two hits and an RBI, Austin Dyck collected three hits and an RBI, while Mike Black recorded two hits and three RBIs in a dominant offensive showing.
For the Muskies, there were still plenty of bright moments despite the loss. Kyler Sept had an excellent opener, collecting two hits and scoring twice. Braelyn Neubrand added two hits and a run scored, while Jesse Bremner ripped a double and Robert Vella drove in a run during the Muskies’ third inning rally.
The second game of the day somehow featured even more offence. The Wagner Lawn Care Angels defeated the CMF Automotive Metropolitans 19-5 in a game that saw the Angels erupt for 26 hits.

After Devin Coombs crushed a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to score Wyatt Predum and open the scoring, the Angels offence never slowed down.
Wesley O’Leary was electric all afternoon. After driving in two runs with a double in the first inning, O’Leary delivered the play of the day in the third inning, blasting an inside-the-park home run that scored Owen McCool and pushed the Angels lead to 19-4. O’Leary finished with three hits, five RBIs, and three runs scored in one of the most explosive individual performances of Opening Day.
Devin Coombs was equally dominant, collecting two hits, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Wyatt Predum added three runs scored and an RBI, Jessie Brown drove in a run while scoring twice, and Owen McCool crossed the plate three times.
Kauner Lehtonen, Dylan Petroff, Michelle Miller-Stafford, and Oswell James all added RBIs as the Angels lineup continuously pressured the Metropolitans defence from top to bottom.
For the Metropolitans, Tamara Evans led the way with three hits and three runs scored in a strong offensive performance. Steve Hamilton added two hits and two runs scored, while Steve DePiero collected two hits and drove in a run. Rob McMinn and Tim Hillson also added RBIs as the Metropolitans battled throughout despite the final score.
Opening Day also showcased exactly what makes the SportsKlub Baseball format unique. With no traditional outs for scoring purposes, every player is guarenteed to bat each inning, consistently remaining involved in the action. Dugouts stayed loud, rallies never died quietly, and games moved quickly while still creating meaningful offensive moments for nearly every player in the lineup.
The format created exactly the type of atmosphere SportsKlub hoped for when the league was created. Fun, relaxed, but still exciting. And after just one day, early storylines are already beginning to emerge.
The Rockies looked powerful offensively behind Hurtubise and Black. The Angels showed terrifying lineup depth from top to bottom. The Muskies displayed grit despite facing an early deficit, while the Metropolitans proved they have enough hitters to put pressure on anyone when rallies start building.
If Opening Day was any indication, this season is going to feature a lot of runs, excitment, and memorable moments.
