Orillia Flag Football: Perfect Bombers go nuclear
Bremner and Thompson combine for eight touchdown passes; Calvillo erupts for 255 receiving yards, Halloch shines in SportsKlub Orillia flag football Week 3
Now three weeks into the fall SportsKlub Orillia flag football season, there is only one unbeaten team left standing.
The CMF Automotive Silver Bombers continued their perfect start Monday afternoon at the West Orillia Sports Complex, putting together one of the most impressive offensive performances of the young season in a 56-12 victory over the reigning Power Bowl champions, the Mariposa Building Services Trojans.
But they weren't alone in lighting up the stat sheet. Marcopolo Calvillo delivered a spectacular 255-yard receiving performance for the Wagner Lawn Care Huskers, Kayden Halloch did a little bit of everything for the McLean & Dickey Thunderbolts, Bailey Yeoman eclipsed 200 receiving yards for the Orillia Synergy Health Care Monsters and the Hotshots Sandblasting Augies picked up their first victory of the season in a two-point thriller.
After three weeks, more players are finding their roles, new stars continue to emerge and the race toward Power Bowl 40 is starting to take shape.
Bremner, Thompson combine for eight TDs as Silver Bombers move to 3-0
On Labour Day, the CMF Automotive Silver Bombers delivered their biggest offensive performance yet. Quarterbacks Jesse Bremner and Colton Thompson combined to throw for 462 yards and eight touchdowns without an interception as CMF rolled to a 56-12 victory over Mariposa Building Services.
Thompson was outstanding, completing five of seven passes for a game-high 260 yards and four touchdowns. Bremner wasn't far behind. The reigning SportsKlub quarterback of the season completed seven of nine passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns, while adding another 70 yards on the ground.
Their receivers made sure all those passes had somewhere to go.
Rishan Harlos turned two catches into a team-high 150 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Luke Phillips continued his impressive start to his rookie season with 115 yards and two scores.
Marisa Bremner caught two passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Walker Armatage added 60 yards and a score, while Matthew Stinson and Jason Coldwell also found the end zone.
The Silver Bombers made plays on the other side of the ball, too, with Ethan Phillips and Jesse Bremner each recording an interception.
Mariposa's Martin Cunningham provided one of the biggest individual performances of the game, catching three passes for 165 yards and a touchdown. Oswell James added six catches for 89 yards and a score, while Sam Skalosky threw for 192 yards and a touchdown.
CMF now sits alone at 3-0 through three weeks, and its offence is giving the rest of SportsKlub plenty to think about.
Halloch does it all as Thunderbolts earn first win
It would be difficult to find an area of the field where Kayden Halloch didn't make an impact Monday night. He threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 35 yards, caught two passes for 55 yards and another touchdown and intercepted a pass on defence as the McLean & Dickey Thunderbolts defeated the Speaking of Wildlife Scouts 35-14. That's 272 total offensive yards, four touchdowns accounted for and an interception.
And Halloch had plenty of help. Colby Shaw caught three passes for 65 yards, with all three receptions going for touchdowns. Shaw also stepped behind centre and threw for another 120 yards and a score. Devin Coombs continued to show his versatility in his first SportsKlub Football season, catching two passes for 65 yards and a touchdown while adding 30 yards and another score through the air. Veteran Seamus McGee contributed 60 receiving yards and an interception, while Jackson Denne added 57 receiving yards.
For the Scouts, James Oxley put together another strong performance, throwing for 115 yards and a touchdown while also leading the team with 115 receiving yards. Harrison Laugalys continued his impressive start with 80 passing yards and 85 receiving yards while leading the Scouts defence with four flags and an interception. Samantha Goodnough caught a touchdown, while Paul Laforet also found the end zone. Laforet added an interception on defence.
One week after celebrating their first victory in franchise history, the Scouts continued to get contributions from throughout their expansion roster. For McLean & Dickey, Week 3 brought something the Thunderbolts had been waiting for: their first win of the fall.
Blues bounce back behind Pitines, Planta
The Rick Grant Landscaping Blues entered Week 3 in unfamiliar territory.
One week after their 16-game regular-season winning streak came to an end, the Blues responded with a 46-27 victory over the previously unbeaten Synergy Health Care Monsters.
Connor Woodbeck led another big night through the air, completing 10 of 15 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns. But the Blues didn't rely on just one quarterback.
Captain Matt Planta threw for 120 yards and a touchdown, rookie Aiden McMaster went 4/4 for 105 yards and a score, while Vince Pitines and Hayden Woodbeck each added touchdown passes. That gave the Blues five different players with a touchdown pass on the night.
Pitines was just as dangerous catching them. The veteran caught six passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns and added an interception defensively. Planta led all Blues receivers with 170 yards and a touchdown on five catches, while Hayden Woodbeck added 90 yards and a score. Amber Weiss and McMaster also caught touchdowns, while Andrew Billark found the end zone for the fifth time in three weeks.
The loss was the first in Synergy Health Care Monsters history, but the expansion team had plenty of performances worth celebrating. Bailey Yeoman had his biggest SportsKlub game yet, exploding for 205 receiving yards and two touchdowns on six catches. Ethan Barber added 120 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Jon Vodarek threw for 255 yards and two scores and caught a 60-yard touchdown.
Captain Andrew Westelaken added 145 passing yards and two touchdowns and led the Monsters defence with four flags, while Barber recorded an interception.
Three games into their inaugural season, the Monsters have already shown they can put plenty of points and yards on the board.
Augies edge Huskers in Week 3 thriller
The closest game of Week 3 saved plenty of drama for the final matchup of the day.
Hotshots Sandblasting earned its first victory of the fall, edging the previously unbeaten Wagner Lawn Care Huskers 34-32.
The Augies received another strong performance from their quarterback combination. Zach Moreau completed nine of 16 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns, while Braeden Price went 7/9 for 135 yards and two scores. Together, they threw for 313 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Price also added 55 yards rushing and 110 receiving yards. But one of the biggest plays of the night belonged to veteran Mike Black. He broke loose for a 90-yard rushing touchdown, providing one of Week 3's longest plays.
Captain Tamara Evans led the Augies with five receptions, finishing with 60 yards and a touchdown. Steve Hamilton, Scott Oliver and Daniel Scavuzzo also caught touchdown passes. Braeden Errico led the defensive effort with five flags, while Black added an interception.
On the other side, Calvillo delivered one of the biggest receiving performances of the season. The Huskers rookie caught eight passes for a staggering 255 yards and three touchdowns, giving him 460 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns over his first three SportsKlub games.
Calvin Hale threw for a Week 3-high 288 yards, while Josh Ayers continued his tremendous start by throwing for 137 yards and three touchdowns and adding 74 yards on the ground. Ben Prinzen caught five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, while Madison Prinzen added a touchdown of her own. Ayers also led the Huskers with five flags defensively.
The Huskers suffered their first loss of the season, but the 34-32 finish provided another reminder that the difference between winning and losing on any given SportsKlub night can sometimes be just one play.
THE STORY OF SEASON 40 IS STARTING To take shape
Three weeks ago, nobody knew exactly what this season would look like.
There were two brand-new teams, dozens of new players and plenty of familiar faces finding themselves in new roles... Now we're starting to find out.
CMF Automotive is the last unbeaten team at 3-0. The Blues have already experienced both sides of a blowout and responded to their first regular-season loss in nearly a year. The Scouts have celebrated the first win in franchise history. The Monsters started their existence with back-to-back victories. The Thunderbolts and Augies both broke through with their first wins Monday night.
The individual performances keep getting bigger. Calvillo has emerged as one of the most exciting new players in the Klub. Yeoman is taking the Klub by storm. Halloch contributes seemingly everywhere. Bremner and Thompson combine for a lethal duo. Players like Luke Phillips, Devin Coombs, Harrison Laugalys and Jackson Denne are already making an impact in their first SportsKlub Orillia Flag Football seasons.
That's part of what makes the first few weeks so much fun. Everyone arrives in August as a name on a roster. Then the games start, teammates get to know each other, roles develop and moments begin piling up.
Eventually, those moments will become a season. The standings will matter more. The Turkey Bowl and Pumpkin Bowl will arrive. The race for the Power Bowl semifinals will get tighter, and eventually two teams will earn the opportunity to play for Power Bowl 40.
But there are still several weeks of football to enjoy before we get there.
More opportunities to make a big catch, throw your first touchdown, pull a flag, meet someone new or simply spend another night hanging around a football field on a fall night.
