Leprechauns dominate Arena Series tune-up

Early revenge delivered as Leprechauns dominate Ice Llamas in exhibition opener at West Orillia Sports Complex

The Leprechauns made sure there was no lingering doubt about how much last year’s Arena Series still mattered to them, delivering a decisive 16–5 exhibition win over the Ice Llamas on Saturday night at the West Orillia Sports Complex.

One season after being reverse swept by the Llamas in a dramatic Arena Series, the Leprechauns came out with purpose, pace, and an edge that was impossible to miss. From the opening shifts, the game felt less like a preseason tune-up and more like a statement.

The Leprechauns attacked in waves, controlled the middle of the ice, and built momentum early that never faded as the night wore on. Rookie skaters Nolan Inglis and Connor Flannery led the charge offensively, showing confidence and creativity well beyond their experience level. Both were consistently dangerous with the puck, creating chances off the rush and capitalizing on breakdowns as the Leprechauns stretched the Ice Llamas’ defensive coverage. Their impact set the tone for a deep offensive performance that saw the Leprechauns score throughout the lineup.

Just as impressive was the Leprechauns’ ability to limit Ice Llamas stars Mark Griffiths and Owen Woolhouse, who were held in check compared to their usual dominant performances. Even with goaltender Chris Langstaff sitting out the pre-series matchup while resting a knee injury, the Leprechauns played a disciplined, structured game, closing gaps quickly and forcing the Llamas’ top scorers into less comfortable situations.

Mitchell Hurtubise provided one of the night’s standout moments, ripping a top-shelf finish that drew a reaction from both benches, while captain Steve Hamilton added a late goal that felt symbolic of the Leprechauns’ confidence and control. It was the kind of finish that reinforces belief, even in a game that ultimately does not count in the standings.

The Ice Llamas were not at full strength, as starting goaltender Waylon Clay sat out Saturday night while being rested for Game 1 of the Arena Series, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7. His absence was noticeable, but it is unlikely to change expectations heading into the official series, where the Llamas remain the slight favourite.

Early betting lines reflect that reality, with the Ice Llamas opening around minus-130 to minus-140 for the series, while the Leprechauns sit close behind at approximately plus-110 to plus-120. The odds suggest respect for the Leprechauns’ showing, without overreacting to an exhibition result.

NFL fans will remember that the 2008 Detroit Lions started 4–0 in the preseason before finishing 0–16 when the games actually mattered. Sports fans know that preseason results rarely tell the full story. Maybe the Leprechauns played with something to prove this week. Maybe the Ice Llamas are staying calm, patient, and focused on when it truly counts.

What is certain is that the Arena Series is already generating buzz. Over the next eight weeks, it is set to become one of the most talked-about sporting events in Orillia. If Saturday night was any indication, this rivalry is far from settled, and the real story is only just beginning.
