Angels, Muskies sweep on Canada Day

Angels stay hot with Canada Day sweep, while the Muskies earn their first wins of the Orillia slo-pitch season in a four-game holiday showcase at Kitchener Park

Complimentary hot dogs, sunny skies and four entertaining ball games made for a memorable Canada Day at Kitchener Park as SportsKlub Baseball finally made up its postponed Week 4 schedule.

The Wagner Lawn Care Angels strengthened their position near the top of the standings by sweeping a doubleheader against the CMF Automotive Metropolitans, while the NKD Deer Muskies picked up their first wins during a pair of tightly contested games against the Studabakers Beachside Rockies.

The Angels' lineup looked every bit like the league's most dangerous offence Wednesday, piling up 42 hits and 29 runs across two victories over the Metropolitans. In the opener, Wagner Lawn Care collected 20 hits in a 14-8 victory.

Devin Coombs led the charge with a home run and two hits, while Wesley O'Leary crossed the plate three times and drove in two runs. Oswell James continued his strong campaign with two hits and two RBIs, while Adam Hillyard, Wyatt Predum and Kauner Lehtonen each added a pair of RBIs.

The Metropolitans refused to go quietly. Faith Bartley collected three hits, Mark Young drove in three runs, while Braeden Price finished with two hits and three RBIs in the loss.

The second game belonged almost entirely to the Angels. Dylan Petroff went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Owen McCool reached base three times and drove in two, Wesley O'Leary added three more hits and two RBIs, while Oswell James drove in four runs as Wagner Lawn Care rolled to a convincing 15-4 victory.

Kauner Lehtonen added three RBIs, David Pearson chipped in three hits, and nearly every Angel contributed offensively as the club finished with 22 hits. Connor Woodbeck tripled for the Metropolitans, while Braeden Price added two hits and an RBI.

The NKD Deer Muskies had been knocking on the door all season. On Canada Day, they finally kicked it open.

After earning their first win of the season in the opener, 12-8 over the Rockies, the Muskies held on for an exciting 11-10 victory in Game 2 

Eddy Tibbo enjoyed a monster performance in Game 1 with three hits and three RBIs, while Iain Bass scored twice and collected two hits. Jesse Bremner, JJ Healy and Paul Laforet each drove in two runs as NKD Deer finished with 19 hits.

Studabakers Beachside stayed within striking distance thanks to three-hit performances from Jason Coldwell and Shawn Thomas, while Mitchell Hurtubise drove in two runs.

The second game produced one of the season's best finishes. The Rockies built an early lead before the Muskies battled back, eventually hanging on for an 11-10 victory.

JJ Healy had another big offensive game with three hits, while Jared MacDonald blasted a home run and drove in three runs. Iain Bass scored twice, Paul Laforet added two hits and an RBI, and the Muskies held off a late Rockies rally to secure the breakthrough victory.

For the Rockies, Austin Dyck reached base three times and scored three runs, Mitchell Hurtubise collected two hits and an RBI, Mike Black homered and drove in two, while Jan Veitch finished with three RBIs.

The SportsKlub Baseball season continues Saturday evening at Kitchener Park with another full slate of doubleheaders. The Wagner Lawn Care Angels will take on the NKD Deer Muskies, while the Studabakers Beachside Rockies battle the CMF Automotive Metropolitans at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
